Jason Scott (front), a soil conservation technician with the Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Melissa Cherry, the district secretary, pack up some trees to give away during the annual Arbor Day giveaway at the conservation district office, 408 N. Market St., Friday morning. Tree seedlings were to be given away on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8:30 a.m., but Ron Harrison, district conservationist, said there was such a crowd already assembled at 8 a.m. that they began giving the trees out early. Among the types of trees given out were Virginia Christmas pine, overcup oak, sawtooth oak, pin oak, white oak and native sweet pecan. Harrison said they had about 2,500 seedlings to give away. Any that were not given away Friday will be donated to local schools, he said.
